I cannot wait for you to try this technique called stack, cut, and shuffle. It sounds like a line dance. I’m giving Rick Adkins credit for sharing it; I watched his video when it was shared in a training group challenge. I shared it with my team on Tuesday night, and they love it.

The technique provides a new twist on 2 things that I already do – creating cards in sets of 4 and spotlighting DSP with panels. Why 4? Typically 4 cards requires 2 pieces of cardstock for the bases and 1 piece for the layers; I’m not left with random scraps. Why panels? That’s a personal preference; I think it creates a pretty card without being complicated. I shared a panel card on Monday here. Panels can be used in a variety of ways and are an easy start to creativity for me. Have I convinced you to try it?

The Facebook Live

In today’s video I didn’t talk about the dice that provided the recipe for my cards. I was working against the clock and getting a sample done was priority. But I did follow the recipe and scored myself at 4 of a kind in Yahtzee terms following a “new” technique called stack, cut, and shuffle. The dice called for a thank you monochromatic card featuring the subtles color family with embellishments and coloring. I’m not sure that my cards are monochromatic, but I hit the other categories.

I’m not going to roll the dice for next week. I’m taking the next 2 weeks off to spend more time with my family. My friend, Syble, is off next week and she and I have plans for starting some baking and decorating traditions with Hazel. I will start Card Yahtzee back in January. I may still have a YouTube or Facebook live, but it will be a surprise not scheduled.

The Details for Stack, Cut, and Shuffle

My best advice is to watch the video first then come back here to get the measurements.

Stack

Start by selecting 4 coordinating patterns of DSP. If the pattern is directional plan your cuts to work with the pattern. Your cards can be horizontal or vertical, and depending on your pattern you may need to decide that before you cut. Stack them so the patterns are all going the same direction. My samples do not have a pattern that required such coordination. In my Facebook post I will share some that do.

Cut

Cut the stack of 4 either 3.75 x 5 or 5 x 3.75. On the short side, cut the stack at 2.5. Set the skinny stack aside for a moment. Rotate the 2.5 x 5 stack 90 degrees to the right. Cut at 2.75. Cut the skinny piece at 1.75. Watch the video for demonstration of the stack and cut.

Shuffle

Now you are ready for the shuffle part of the technique. I hate to tell you to watch the video to see it in action, but that’s what I’m going to do. Until you do this for yourself, written directions will be very confusing.

As I shuffled my DSP pieces I set them on the layer of cardstock that they would be adhered to. Then I reviewed each arrangement to determine the card orientation and DSP placement. The video demonstrates all of the steps in the stack, cut, and shuffle technique. Please comment with any questions or ideas you have for using it yourself.
