I didn’t know July was watercolor month until Stampin’ Up! shared that a week or so ago. I planned today’s post to feature a stampset from the July Card Club Class or the July Christmas Card Class. What’s that saying about the best laid plans?

Stampin’ Up! published a short video featuring the No Line Watercoloring technique and created a beautiful card. It’s a cool, short video but it isn’t a video teaching how to follow the technique. I’ve had requests for classes or videos teaching different coloring techniques and decided today was the day to expand upon the Stampin’ Up! video.

This is my version of the card Stampin’ Up! created in their video.

Let me tell you a little more about the process of getting to this card. There are so many choices for coloring and watercoloring. They all seem to have one thing in common – layers of color. I shared that in the videos today. My big head seems to have gotten in the way of the good parts of the first video so I jumped back into recording and made a 2nd, short video of just the coloring. I hope that helps. Annette – thank you for letting me know. I’m so sorry I was so heads down that I didn’t see your comment in time to adjust during the first video.

A little Help from Hardin

Number 1 is the version I created in the first video. I wet the paper in small areas as I colored. Confession – I did continue adding layers after the video. I went over the lines on the image to create more definition. Number 2 is the version I felt most closely resembled the card Stampin’ Up! in their video. Number 3 is the version I created in the second video. I spritzed the entire design before I began coloring. There was a lot more movement of the colors. If I were to do this again I think I would cut the flower separate from greenery off and color each of the 3 areas. And I would only spritz the floral image. Isn’t it typical that I like some pieces best from each one?

Hardin stopped in to see me and I asked his thoughts on the 3 images. He liked the definition in Number 1 but thought the highlighting was best in Number 3. He felt Number 2 didn’t have enough blending. I was so glad for his thoughts and immediately decided to pull him into the creative process more often. I had forgotten about his self portrait that had recently been featured at a local art show.

Pretty amazing, right?

After Hardin shared his thoughts I went back to the first image with a wet brush and added water in a few places in an attempt to lift some color and create additional highlights. Here’s the original Number 1 and the revised Number 1 side by side so you can see the difference. Can you see the difference?

I’m pleased with the final result and hope you give this a try for yourself. I’d love to see what you create. Please tag me on social media when you share your version or email a photo to me at hello@michelesalchow.
