A 50th birthday is pretty big and deserves an over the top birthday card. When you miss the birthday, the card must be even more. That’s why I came up with this over the top fun fold birthday card. I actually had 2 friends turn 50 in the last few weeks – I need to get busy!
The Facebook Live
Are you a fan of the Yahtzee dice game? I am, and I’m learning that many of my friends are also. When I envision a score for each week’s project I see the bottom of the scorecard with 1 of a kind, 2 of a kind and so on until Yahtzee, which is 5 of a kind. For me to score a Yahtzee I need to meet all 5 of the criteria I rolled.
Last week we rolled the dice to determine the recipe for today’s edition of Card Yahtzee. I wasn’t at all sure I would manage a Yahtzee today; to do that I needed to create a masculine, over the top card featuring the In Colors family, blending, and embellishments. But we did it!
The Details for This Accordion Style
Start with a card base 5 1/2 x 11. Score it on the long side at 1 1/4, 5 1/2, and 9 1/4
Pick patterns for the panels. From left to right they measure 1 x 5 1/4, 4 x 5 1/4, 3 1/2 x 5 1/4, 1 1/2 x 5 1/4. On the opposite side of the card base you need patterns 1 x 5 1/4 and 3 1/2 x 5 1/4. Both of those panels and the 1 1/2 x 5 1/4 panels will be visible when folded. The photos below and the video should help you with placement. It’s a fun fold that looks over the top, but it’s just folded paper with some pretty pieces on top.
I decided to use Cinnamon Cider cardstock for the 4 x 5 1/4 panel and add a second greeting and a cute squirrel. The Nuts About Squirrels stampset includes squirrel images for two-step stamping or for stamping an outline and coloring. I am so happy that it is carrying over! Today I stamped the outline and colored with Stampin’ Blends. To minimize bulk I didn’t put the squirrel or greeting on dimensionals.
A belly band holds the card closed and decorates the card front. A 10 x 1 piece of cardstock serves as the band. Wrap the band gently around the card; you don’t need to score it. Overlap the ends in the front an adhere them together. The band needs to be snug enough to not fall off the card but not so snug that you can’t slide it off the card. The greeting will hide the ends of the band. I decided to wrap a piece of Early Espresso ribbon and a piece of Bumblebee ribbon as well . The ends of the ribbon are hidden under the greeting and 2 more pieces of ribbon are threaded under the first two and tied into a knot.
I stamped the greeting in Early Espresso on a label die cut with the Stitched So Sweetly dies. I did use dimensionals on the greeting and strategically placed them to adhere to the Crumb Cake strip, not just the ribbon.
Are You Playing Along?
I would love to see and share your creations. I honestly don’t know if you can add a photo comment to the blog here or the YouTube video. You can add it to the Facebook Page. If you need help sharing your photo, email it to me and I’ll share it for you. Send it to hello@michelesalchow.com. (I’ve got prizes to send for participation.)
Next week the dice call for a monochromatic thank you card featuring the Subtles color family, coloring, and embellishing. Join me on Facebook next Wednesday to see if I can get a Yahtzee again.
